I have always sewn either by hand or machine. I even taught it in the 1970s for a while.
I now create my own substrates on which to stitch. Natural methods of dyeing and botanical printing allow me to combine many aspects of my life that bring me joy. Gardens, art and stitch. One such patch was the rhubarb bed. The original plants were over ten years old and this year they refused to produce any useable stalks. So up they came and after investigation the roots weren’t even suitable to split and replant they were rotten and woody. So the decision was made to replace with new and I got to chop up the ‘good’ bits for some natural dyeing. I had successfully made a mordant from leaves before but never used the roots. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">After cleaning, peeling and chopping they looked like this.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Next it was time to consult Jenny Deans book ‘Wild Colour’. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">The 600gms roots were brought to a simmer for 30 minutes. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Meanwhile I prepared fabric. Animal fibres give the best results and although fabric does not require a mordant I chose to mordant my silk habotai and noil with Alum and Cream of Tartar. A piece of 50/50 silk wool mix was not mordanted. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">The wetted fabric was dipped in the dye pots allowing plenty of room for movement of the fabric to ensure an even take up of the dye. The 1st extraction was unfortunately left unattended for enough time to boil which affects the colour changing from a bright yellow to a not unattractive mustard shade. For the second extraction I left the fabric to steep for 8 hours. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJtgToCLzsnOfGaRTZs6rYuBKfNJZpcY9Ae12DGSpuVtkUYLX1SNitJ-Qc9YOARsIkb9WxSYVRTGoknmKOcydSxRPlXLepqrZZNfxAG27XwYgJ_7d56S2Y4_a0iJD77eH1Xc_JLs8IyUuw/s1600/B81C360D-2ACE-4400-A637-8FB038E76104.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="915" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJtgToCLzsnOfGaRTZs6rYuBKfNJZpcY9Ae12DGSpuVtkUYLX1SNitJ-Qc9YOARsIkb9WxSYVRTGoknmKOcydSxRPlXLepqrZZNfxAG27XwYgJ_7d56S2Y4_a0iJD77eH1Xc_JLs8IyUuw/s640/B81C360D-2ACE-4400-A637-8FB038E76104.jpeg" width="364" /></a></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">This photograph shows the range of colours I achieved on silk habotai and silk georgette & net, the 4th example is the wool/silk mix. I made two extractions the colour diminishing with each one. Interesting I was able to regain the brightness of yellow with the second extraction. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large; text-align: left;">The top two were dyed in an extraction from the leaves which were very small. I expected green but again I think they were heated too much. They are, however, a pleasing coffee colour. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Using iron as a post modifier produced the bottom two olive coloured samples. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">This photograph shows the results on silk noil. Similar comment as above. What an amazing set of colour variation. The one difference here was the piece that I had in my stash that had been previously mordanted in Titanium Oxide, third down, which gave a much deeper brighter yellow. For those who have used Titanium Oxide as a mordant you will know this effect. Again the top two are examples of rhubarb leaves dye but this time I dipped the second one in vinegar. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">This shows the use of iron as a post modifier on three different samples of silk noil. </span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Now the samples are collated I know the vat isn’t exhausted yet so I will continue to use it until there is no useable colour left. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I’m in Sydney on the last lap of our month ‘down under’. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">As I look out over Sydney harbour and the iconic Opera House I am attempting to finish this indigo piece before we travel home. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I am using up left over pieces of indigo dyed natural fabrics by weaving them, attaching to a base fabric and then slow stitching to hold it altogether. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I love the variation of colour that can be achieved with different fabrics. I use a synthetic vat, I find it more convenient as I don’t do a lot of indigo dyeing and when I do it is quick and easy to organise. All the threads are natural, cotton and silk. Well known choc ice sticks recycled. </span><br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"> I am finding slow stitching is so relaxing and as I listen to some Barbara Streisand I can let the fabric and thread tell me which stitches and tone to use. If you have liked what you see please hit like and or leave a comment so I know you passed by. </span><br />

Macclesfield and Glossop EGs came together to display a full range of techniques which is on display at Macclesfield Silk Museum.<br />

I have really enjoyed revisiting disperse dyes. The colours they give when transferring them to substrates is wonderful. In this instance it was on to pelmet Vilene and when they are coated with a layer of acrylic wax the colours just zing.<br />
<br />
I choose to cover the front, back and spine of this Seawhites sketch book after embellishing with stencils and running stitch.<br />
<br />
I am into quotes about art by artists at the moment so this is one of my favourites by Vincent.<br />

<br />
The course was entitled<br />
<br />
<strong><span style="font-size: large;"> 'Using the Found - Stitch, Cloth and Memory'</span></strong><br />
<strong><span style="font-size: large;"></span></strong><br />
We were encouraged to think green and use what we found and in this instance that was old textiles. old table linen, garments, embellishments etc.<br />
<br />
We used all parts of the textiles, hems, cuffs seams in fact anything. We made stamps out of textiles and used stitch and fabric 'mark making' activities.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWrCHx86WdfagxyvmxBl9H1lpJTwZ-zlG35_GijTwQ9d-lkNfLx7Iy1zwLKKVnX-qHtPiBKHtILex6JL4b-_YhIDyTGra2_Zy-LZP8QJk-S-AyTlhMuZgSlKdtu5bm-L3tVE8Hq1XO0fBq/s1600/IMG_0390.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWrCHx86WdfagxyvmxBl9H1lpJTwZ-zlG35_GijTwQ9d-lkNfLx7Iy1zwLKKVnX-qHtPiBKHtILex6JL4b-_YhIDyTGra2_Zy-LZP8QJk-S-AyTlhMuZgSlKdtu5bm-L3tVE8Hq1XO0fBq/s1600/IMG_0390.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a>This is one side of my 'stamp'</div>
<br />
Our substrates were old fabrics and paper. After producing an array of both by printing, dyeing or painting we used our stamps to create surface decoration.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixf0ChqtaEjLw_hjIuiX8mtmjt-fOJ8RdnK5EQVCV27OiCy5CS25mZhXBmiSN_eQ85Yv6ISk5rwJIWfz97rDzNyBh_M-u0S63_wx3REPHHgcbtswQK03d5FwU5I_kyThb3gXi1hbe7lsYl/s1600/IMG_0407.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixf0ChqtaEjLw_hjIuiX8mtmjt-fOJ8RdnK5EQVCV27OiCy5CS25mZhXBmiSN_eQ85Yv6ISk5rwJIWfz97rDzNyBh_M-u0S63_wx3REPHHgcbtswQK03d5FwU5I_kyThb3gXi1hbe7lsYl/s1600/IMG_0407.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This sample clearly shows the use of 'holey' piece of fabric used to print the blue strips. In the burgundy strips I used a high relief piece old lace.</div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjriMlGzQ1LYRW0M51NnHJnSjD63_R5vfD1cmCjm-gH52QIIfYQfflpdxoydqn7H_qvRvrDW2qW-NOFpFJeIxgyDkQSdkakWmNd2ONddcyeyAzrv7cDo5ljmo6Ly9ktpg6Njp_lUkbqexz_/s1600/IMG_0405.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjriMlGzQ1LYRW0M51NnHJnSjD63_R5vfD1cmCjm-gH52QIIfYQfflpdxoydqn7H_qvRvrDW2qW-NOFpFJeIxgyDkQSdkakWmNd2ONddcyeyAzrv7cDo5ljmo6Ly9ktpg6Njp_lUkbqexz_/s1600/IMG_0405.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here this image shows a range of substrates and printing/stamping.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitjFWgeGpHzCl_moU-Kz2Pjg0kEol9oU05MjC3zGjQJlLHgTX7o9IULVYev-7nkO69dyU8kxTMuMGDXWrcBzLt46cMhyphenhyphenChcZfIHZNzr0w2NLDLmTbXU89k3hUJqpimU31J-h8OOAGY3JWB/s1600/IMG_0404.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitjFWgeGpHzCl_moU-Kz2Pjg0kEol9oU05MjC3zGjQJlLHgTX7o9IULVYev-7nkO69dyU8kxTMuMGDXWrcBzLt46cMhyphenhyphenChcZfIHZNzr0w2NLDLmTbXU89k3hUJqpimU31J-h8OOAGY3JWB/s1600/IMG_0404.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This was my favourite piece.</div>
<br />
<br />
It was from all of this that we then produced collages. Cas introduced us to her method of using wall paper paste to adhere the pieces together. Once this was dry I spent a joyful few hours free machine embroidering on top.<br />

This was an exercise when Cas gave us some random pieces that we had to incorporate into our collages. I found this challenging as I thought that I knew where I was going but a curved ball like this took us all out of our comfort zone.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
By the end of the four days I was thinking about what I wanted to achieve in terms of the way I felt about the textiles that I was using rather than let a technique lead me. This is a new way of thinking in relation to textile art but when I thought about it I have actually used this approach in the past, especially when using old textiles that mean something to me as in this piece entitled 'Memories', it was inspired by a piece of fabric that my mother bought when I was a baby but she never got round to making it up. the salmon colour has always staying with me and it sparked the colour choice for this piece of work.</div>

As a member of Textile 21 I have been busy finishing my exhibit which is part of a 16 piece installation. Fashioned in Silk is a departure for us away from the tradition textile art pictures on a wall exhibition. 16 silk organza toiles display embellishments that reflect members style and expertise. The image above is the one that is to appear in the local press and below a close up of the hem detail of my dress 'Effervescence'.<br />

As a member of Textile 21 we have just finished hanging our latest exhibition at Quarry Bank Mill, Styal, Cheshire. The preview is on Friday night 20th September and then open to the general public who visit the Mill which is a National Trust property.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqgaO_LOuyMZc_mENPBkqxJBapT0hUa4Nv41M7M3IKf706VtSRBDp9DJmcJjHP7OSJpYX_JDBQ_EZVDWRE24DsDSVyAUapdSo0LXK1fUkHGedq-M60h09vDzgPk5ZzE32DDKafR9gVhowr/s1600/IMG_5316.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqgaO_LOuyMZc_mENPBkqxJBapT0hUa4Nv41M7M3IKf706VtSRBDp9DJmcJjHP7OSJpYX_JDBQ_EZVDWRE24DsDSVyAUapdSo0LXK1fUkHGedq-M60h09vDzgPk5ZzE32DDKafR9gVhowr/s320/IMG_5316.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
The exhibition is entitled 'Tech Styles' if you say it quickly you will 'get it'. We wanted to celebrate the innovative use of technology at the Mill and the Greg family's legacy to the 21st century. Members have interpreted the theme individually to produce challenging and exciting tactile pieces. the exhibition runs until the 24th November 2013. The above image is a close up of a section of my piece 'The Humble Circle'. On this section I have stencilled on a relief piece of dyed fabric in the shape of a cog.<br />

I chose to use old linen and lace handed down by family members and the only colour came from the delicate brown of the teabags which I covered with silk organza.</div>

I started the process of writing the talk about 2 months before the due date of 16th May. It was a most enjoyable task as I visited many memories that made up my life and realised how rich it had been both emotionally and creatively. These aspects helped to minimise the negative physical blips in my life. Having taught for 30 years meant that the presentation held no worries for me but the content was the issue. I suppose most of us don't consider ourselves as experts and tend to hide our achievements making excuses before we even show our work. The ladies at Chelford were very welcoming and I was kept talking for over half an hour at the end with many members exchanging email addresses.<br />
For a picture of the night go to <a href="http://chelfordstitchers.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/margaret-steeden-moving-on-may-2012.html">http://chelfordstitchers.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/margaret-steeden-moving-on-may-2012.html</a> this was a piece of machine embellished velvet that is covered in bits from my bit box, I will do something with it one day!!!!<br />

Busy at the moment preparing for Holmfirth at the end of the month, I have been making brooches this year from wool and charms, hopefully post some pics when finished. Also for Silk-n-Threads' exhibition at <strong>Bradbury House </strong>also at the end of the month. <a href="http://silk-n-threads.blogspot.co.uk/">http://silk-n-threads.blogspot.co.uk/</a><br />

Back in 2007 I went on a workshop to create a collage that was printed on to fabric, I came away with two collages of my parents and they sat in my UFO box for over 3 years. I spent along time deciding what to do with them and then when my youngest daughter gave me her old sewing box I decided to cover it with the said collage after embroidering it with items relevant to Emily and Bert.It was my way of creating an heirloom that hopefully one of my daughters will cherish.<br />

I have been experimenting with new ways of using silk in my work. Just painting it had lost interest for me so I have started to manipulate it first and then paint it. Very pleased with the result. I orginally intended to complete the centre using thread and silk cocoons but time ran away with me and to finish it in time for the latest Silk-n-Threads exhibition I had to use acrylics instead.Margaret Shttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16447640638776118326noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-820557132385717707.post-29354313196428698192011-01-30T15:24:00.000+00:002011-11-29T12:42:09.943+00:00SKETCHBOOK CHALLENGE<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I have been taking part in the Sketchbook Challenge set by Sue Bleiweiss <a href="http://sketchbookchallenge.blogspot.com/2011/01/sketchbook-challenge-begins.html">http://sketchbookchallenge.blogspot.com/2011/01/sketchbook-challenge-begins.html</a> and this is my first page of doodles under the title 'Highly Prized'. I also made the sketchbook to house the sketches and I am very plesed with the effect gained by stencilling over an old purple disposable tablecloth with Markal oil sticks and Treasure Gold products. To protect the surface I acrylic waxed the final result.<br />

Sadly it is no longer there as the new owner has pulled up most of the garden for an extension!! So glad I have a reminder of this stunning clematis 'The President'. I've bought a new one for a trellis at our new house.</div><br />

It was a piece that I completed for the Textile 21 exhibition at Norton Priory last year, before all my operations and because it was done whilst I was not feeling 100% I dismissed it. It is a peaceful piece and was a success in terms of techniques that worked. The background is a piece of dry felted velvet using silk and wool tops. In particular I liked the effect achieved by the silk noil.<em> </em>The stems were trusty tyvek rolled painted heated and then painted again for highlights. As with most of my pieces the finishing touches were hand stitches for the seed heads. <img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 300px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5357621262457428210" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh49edzoZE8y83yB0NSXZFbclgVesFQtS377amEGV3m6u44c5R8mBixhWXQ7V1WxxTWGPi9qUuZOY9vyJEQ4gHWa16zfhBh8ARr8kdm4aUT3NAnTvJx7xKpaaJVLmGjhjQQmHkrHr5c5pGu/s400/060.JPG" /><br />Well it has gone, sold at the Holmfirth Art Week. When I found out the buyer I was very excited as it is the local Yorkshire artist <a href="http://www.absolutearts.com/portfolios/j/jillmoynan/">Jill Moynan</a>, check out her pictures. Even more surprising was the fact that of all the 500+ pictures on show it was one of <a href="http://www.artgallery.co.uk/work/work2.2.aspx?mode=fullscreen&workid=13989&ref=aw#">hers</a> that I would have chosen as my favourite and given wall space to.
